Balsa Wood Bridge Building Contest

Every year, the University of Evansville ASCE Student Chapter sponsors a balsa wood bridge building contest for area elementary, middle, and high school students. Bridges are built by the students and load tested at Washington Square Mall in Evansville as a part of the National Engineer's Week Celebration.


This Year's Event - RESULTS

Washington Square Mall
Saturday, Feb 21, 2009

The bridges are displayed and loaded to failure in the center court of Washington Square Mall. The bridges will be scored and ranked by their efficiency (load to weight ratio). Awards will be given in each division:

  • Div I - Grades K-5
  • Div II - Grades 6-8
  • Div III - Grades 9-12

In addition, a scholarship will be given to the high school Junior with the highest ranking bridge.

The registration fee of $12 for individuals and $20 for a team of two covers the cost of the wood and a T-shirt for each participant. Registration fees are payable on Pick-Up day.

  • Students may participate individually or in teams of two.
  • Materials to be used will be provided on Pick-up Day

  • ASCE members will be available to answer questions
